ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT AND LIFE SKILLS SUPPORT.

Economic Empowerment

AVCOH-Uganda has been supporting war affected youth in the post conflict region in Northern Uganda through formation of youth groups, capacity development of their groups, provision of livelihood support and life skill training like the village saving and loan scheme; to enable them gain capital for their small ventures.

We have supported over 200 war affected youths as direct beneficiaries with local improved goats and Billy goats.

The livelihood intervention seeks to promote households food and income security for better livelihoods in the region. Our work concentrates in ensuring that communities have better access to food and income through provision of take off inputs (e.g. ox team, piglets, seeds, beehives), improving agronomical practices, provision of skills and knowledge in entrepreneurship, identifying, mobilizing and organizing farmers in to enterprise farmer groups, setting and operationalising Technology Transfer Sites, facilitating formation of kitchen gardening, mobilizing group savings through pooling (‘boli cap’), promoting access and utilization of land and farmer information centre

We also aim to improve people’s means of income by providing vocational skills training to youth and women to run small scale businesses through tailoring, knitting, weaving, bicycle repairing, saloons, catering and events management.

Our livelihood program targets the vulnerable people in the community, with focus on female headed households, child headed households, unemployed youth and peasant farmers. The targeted beneficiary groups have fairly balanced number of males and females.

AVCOH revolving system of inputs is one of the strategies of reaching out to many community group households. These groups are located in the same community as the direct beneficiary groups and are nominated by the beneficiary group for onward transfer of knowledge, inputs and solidarity.
